Ballinger, TX is an awesome place to call home. There are plenty of parks and lakes in the area, providing many opportunities for outdoor recreation. Today, we’re looking at where to engage in one of the most popular outdoor activities, biking. Read on to discover some of the best biking trails within driving distance of the city.

1. Turkey Creek Trail

Our favorite mountain biking trail in the Ballinger area is the Turkey Creek Trail at San Angelo State Park. This state park is located at 362 FM 2288, and the Turkey Creek Trail is a four-mile trail located on the south side of the park. The Winding Snake Trail is another trail on the south side of this state park that is worth exploring on your bike. It is a 2.8-mile moderate out-and-back trail that poses a moderate challenge.

We also recommend the River Bend Trail System located on the north side of San Angelo State Park. This trail system is 2.9 miles in one direction, and the terrain is varied, so it also is moderately challenging. The 4.4-mile Dinosaur Trail System is another moderately difficult mountain biking trail that we recommend exploring. At the end of this trail, you can see fossilized tracks.

2. Abilene Dam Road

Another bike trail worth exploring is Abilene Dam Road. This trail is located at Abilene State Park at 150 Park Road 32, starting near the boat launch and meandering along much of Lake Abilene. This scenic loop trail provides stunning views of Elm Creek Valley, too. Additionally, you can see a wide variety of wildlife while traversing this trail, including:

  • Beavers
  • Waterfowl
  • White-tailed deer
  • Roadrunners

3. Nopales Ridge Trail

Another great bike trail near Ballinger is the Nopales Ridge Trail in Lake Brownwood State Park at 200 State Highway Park Road 15. This 2.9-mile trail is moderately challenging, and there are many beautiful twisted-leaf yuccas and nopal cacti you can see while going down this trail. There are several more miles of biking and hiking trails in this state park, too, including the 1.4-mile Texas Oak Trail.

The best part of the Texas Oak Trail is that there are several types of Texas oaks you can see. The most common tree you can see along this trail is ht Texas red oak. However, live oaks and post oaks are also common.

There is no shortage of awesome places to bike within driving distance of Ballinger, but you need a reliable vehicle to get to the best trails. If you’re in the market for a new car, contact us today at Toliver Brothers to schedule a test drive for a 2024 Chevy Blazer.
